What are your thoughts about rap music?

What are the criticisms against some rap music and music videos?

  1. I think its degrading for women in the videos and in the words. I don't enjoy being called names and I don't like that its being taught and tolerated to young boys that consider it ok to say. I think the rapers say what they say because it sells, but overall its degrading and hurtful.

  2. I strongly agree with Becky. The way certain rap music is done is very negative. I believe that most of the mainstream rap music helps to reinforce racism and other negative opinions of the black culture. There is some rap and hip hop music wich is not degrading or offensive, such as that of Toby Mac.

  3. I don;t like how women are portrayed in rap music and the music videos. I don't apperciate being called the names they use ( I am sure other women feel the same) Women are streotyped and over-simplified. Like Becky said young boys are learning and picking up these things. It is very hurtful.

  4. I like rap music, but I also agree that some rappers are too vulgar and negative. I agree with the females that have posted above, but there is some really good rap music out there!! I do agree with Ian on his point of view on mainstream rap music.

  5. Rap music portrays women as "Ho's", "Bitches," and pretty much just a piece of ass. It's ridiculous cause just walking down the street some guy can just yell out, "Hey girl, can I hit that?!" I don't know about any other girl but that is just degrading to women. It just makes me feel dirty thinking that some women stoop that low to get noticed or get attention just because rappers choose to portray women that way. Even in videos, some women's dreams come true to be practically naked in some rapper's music video. It's extremely degrading to women. Also, what are little girls thinking when they stumble across MTV and see a music video, or if they have older brothers that listen to rap, this is giving them a false image of themselves and they believe that they only way they're going to get noticed is to show some cleavage or their midriff. This could be damaging. I know this sounds extreme, but it could happen, that's why parents are so concerned with their children listening to this type of music.

  6. I agree that rap music can be offensive and degrading to women, I fact I stopped listening to rap music awhile back for that same reason. The lyricists that right that music are sending out horrible messages to society so therefore I believe only good wholesome rap music like atmosphere or Brother Ali should be allowed to play their music, for their music sends a solid message instead of the mainstream crap thaey play on the radio.

  7. The reason of that the lyrics are degrading is because N.W.A. started this whole movement. I love rap music, in fact i used to be a rapper myself. There are a lot of great songs out there that arent bitch this, bitch that. the song that have a meaning behind the songs are very touching if you ever listen to rap. These songs arent usually on the air because they are "soft" noone wants people thinking they are soft. Its a competition of who can be harder and who is harder has more power. Now when i say listen to rap i mean everything from Atmosphere to Eminem to Lil' Jon to Nas. Atmosphere has a lot of these songs and so does eminem with his new songs that came out. Its just another way of expressing ourselves. I want you to listen to the song "I Can" by Nas and tell me what you think. Look at hard rock, they talk about killing, but so many people just look at rap music for the soul reason of blacks behind the mic. I stongly believe that is the only reason rap gets a bad name. Yes some of the songs are very degradeful but there are women out there that dont care and wont care. Most of the women in the videos sleep with the producers and rappers just to be in it. If we didnt have women sleeping around to get their 15 min of fame we wouldnt have such degrading rap music.

  8. For me, I don't really let music make me feel degrated. I understand that what they are saying can be wrong, but I dont take it personally and let it bother me. If someone were to actually come to me and say some of the things they say in their music, yes i would be offended. I personally really love rap music and listen to it often. I like the beat and i think there are some really talented rap artists out there. Regardless what they say, I will still always love rap music.

  10. i also am not offended by rap music i like it and listen to it regularly. i think that sometimes there are some nasty pictures painted about women but how did they get the ideas to write about these things? some women (like the majority of the video girls) portray themselves as "ho's" and that is what sells these days. i'm not saying it's right i am just not offended by it.
