Columbus Day ?

Should we or should we not celebrate Columbus day and what are the days functions and dysfunctions?

  1. WE SHOULD NOT celebrate Colubus day! It causes a lot of horrifying memories to different groups of people. He didn't discover what was already here, He didn't respect the Indians culture at all and created a genocide. It is ridiculous that businesses are closed for this holiday, it's just another way for the government to have vacation days!

  2. I think that Colombus was given too much credit for erroneous achievements and dishonesty. We should neither admire or observe a day dedicated to a person who commited such terrible acts againsed the native people of our country. I think that it is important to teach the real history of colombus in public schools.

  3. I think that kamille makes a good point, yet I believe that columbus day is celebrated because without columbus people from europe in those times would not have found out about the United States. To better understand who we are we must all learn to celebrate columbus day, for our ancestors owe him a lot, However the salutrean people were here first so I can see why you could say that he never discovered america because they were here first.

  4. I completely agree with Ben, i think that Columbus day should not be celebrated based on the information that most children are filled with in school,Columbus day should possibly be a day when we can teach what really happened and pay respect to all of the Indians who were treated like savages during this time.

  5. I think we should celebrate Columbus Day. It is after all a tradition. Even if I think of traditions just like the book about how a village stoned the one who drew the marked rock just because it was tradition. But back to Columbus Day- I think everyone should be taught all aspects of Columbus- his findings, his killings, his reasons, his REAL name, and everything that is good and all that is bad about him. In this way students, kids and adults can learn that if he is a hero it came at a great cost. If he is not it shows the pain and agony of everyone else.
Columbus Day could potentially be a new way to share a different mirror :)
