The Power of Symbols

Symbols are everywhere and are used to understand everything. In all reality, it makes no diffrence if a symbol is appealing based on appearence. The only thing that matters is the symbolism. For example, I am not Jewish. I would admit that the two over lapping triangles to make the Star of David looks rather cool. However, I know that it represents a certain belief in faith and it is used to shrink down the complexities of Judaism to a simple symbol. That being said, I would never represent this cool looking sign because of my personal beliefs.

Same principle with the cross and how it represents the coming of the son of "God" and that he died for our sins. The list can go on forever.

What is the difference between a non-believer representing faith signs and "non-racists" representing the Confederate flag? It makes no difference if in one's own mind, different meanings are created. What do certain signs mean to the majority of the population? Where do signs originate from and what is its purpose? This is what people have to be accountable for and before any symbols are represented, people have to understand what interpretations are going to be made by the people observing.

  1. I agree with that. Many people who use symbols because they think they look cool, or maybe they even mean somethings to them other than what they are supposed to mean. I think that we should not make judgements about someone just because of a symbol they are using. Maybe we should even ask them what that symbol means to them. A symbol for one person may represent something completely different to someone else. I think we also need to think about what the symbols we are using, mean to other people and realize that some people will see it differently.

  2. I agree for the most part with what this is saying. I think alot of times people see a cool symbol and will buy things with the symbol and they wont even know what it means. But on the other hand, there are alot of people that believe in there symbol and know exactly what it means. For example, i have a clover with a banner running thru it with my families name on it tattooed on my calf because i am irish and the clover is a symbol to show that you are irish. So basically theres just alot of people that think a certain symbol is cool and theres some that actually know what a symbol means and thats probably the way its going to be forever

  3. I understand that to many people the confederate flag is used to be a racist symbol, but there are also other people who do not view the flag as a racist symbol. Some people may just like the looks of the flag, or kids started putting it in the back of their trucks after The Dukes of Hazard came out. I think that if you are unable to see that everybody views everything differently youre just being small minded. Yes, I agree that you should understand the history that comes with that particular flag, but do not just assume everyone flying that flag is a racist.

  4. I agree with the things that are being said here. Just because someone is representing a symbol doesn't necessarily mean that they believe in it, but I think that the person should at least know what the symbol really represents before they go around showing it off. If you are someone who is offended by the symbol maybe ask the person about it before you accuse them of anything.

  5. The supporter of the symbol should really know what it means. That's for sure. The confederate flag will always be tied to racism and will always intimidate others. Isn't it about time we just retire it? I'm sure it would mean more for the African Americans living today to retire it than us whites. Its just a flag with some strips.
