I am interested to know why people are voting for Obama. Is it because of his credentials? Or because they think it would be good to have a black president? Do they think that having a black president somehow makes us more diverse? I would like to discus this so please post. Ian

  1. I think that how the feelings are towards Bush that the people of America want to have change and something different and since he is black it would be a difference to everyone same as if we had a president that was a women because it has never been done before it would mean change and that is what the people want so their chances are very good at winning just because of those reasons. Also saying that having a black president would make us more diverse i totally agree with it because now we know as Americans that we are a diverse society but i think that some of the other countries would see us more differently and see us as a more diverse nation.

  2. I don't think that people are voting for him just because he's black. I think Bush probably put a sour taste into everyone's mouth and now they are ready for someone different. The fact that he's black just means he probably had to work a lot harder than Bush and McCain. I like that he had to work harder and wanted to work harder so that he could represent us.

  3. I like the comments that are being posted. I think Becky has a good point about Bush leaving a sour taste and people wanting change, I personally am a McCain man, but I am not totally set against Obama. I also do not think that having a black president would make us more diverse, we are already the most diverse country in the world, and the reason all our presidents have been white males is because blacks and women have never run for president before now. I see nothing wrong with a black man being president I also see nothing wrong with white males being presidents for the rest of time, as long as the best man is elected, I do however have reservations about a woman president, God made men and women different on purpose, men can do handle some things better than women and vise versa, I have my doubts about whether or not a woman can handle being president. 4. So far i like reading everyones comments because everyone has their own feeling about this election. When it comes to people voting for Obama just because he is black i dont believe because many people who agree with Obamas ways know that he truly about making this country a more safe diverse nation. Many people are also counting on Obama to fix President Bush's mistakes and we can't count on him fixing all of them because i agree with what becky said about bush puting a sour taste in everyones mouth.

  5. i have to say (as calmly as possiable) that i totally disagree with much of what you said. Victoria Woodhull ran for president in 1872! Before women even had the right to vote, we were trying to show that we had the potential to run the country. and since her, 58 other women have been candidates as president of the USA. while many of these women ran for independent parties, they were still candidates. and i, not believing in the traditional idea of god that you mentioned, don't think women (or any human for that matter) are any lower on the totum pole than anyone else. with that said, i am supporting Obama bacause he seems to be what the US needs. Obama is a real human, who i think could do a good job running our country. like becky said, i feel as if the US needs change, and that Obama can bring us the change we need.

  6. Well, I do not think that anyone is lower on the totem pole, and I never said so in my comment. I believe whole heartedly in that we are all created equal, and I just simply believe the fact that men and women are made different. And it was the traditional belief in God which started this country and allowed it to grow into something prosperous, none of the things in this world would be possible if not for God. This country was founded under God and it is the ones who stray from that belief that have helped to weaken this country. I also believe that Obama says nothing but things that have been said by others before him, he is nothing special, and of course he is questioned about race, he would be the first black President, why wouldn't he be questioned? People want to know what potential Presidents think about issues that involve them. I think McCain seems like someone who has alot of common sense, whereas Obama strikes me as someone who thinks that since he has a big education that he is more qualified or smarter than most. Being smart is not all about your level of education. I voted for Bush both times, I did not think that he would make a great President, but I did believe that he was the lesser of 2 evils, I also just don't like John Kerry, I always thought he was just an arrogant shmuck. I like that Bush did not let us get pushed around, that he went after the ones who hurt us, and the major threats like Sadam. I do think that we may have been in Iraq for to long though. I want McCain for President but I would not be mad or dissappointed if Obama won. Ian

  7. Obama isn't standing on nothing. He has the right issues and wants to bring a change to the US for the better. Americans are ready for a change. It has nothing to do with him being black, and shouldn't. If Obama does become president, it is not that the US will become more diverse. It is, I believe, that an awakening will come to the American people that the issue of color (and race in general) is slowly diminishing.

  8. I agree with some of the posts, I think people are voting for Obama, because he is for change but not because he is black and they think he will be that change. I know some people may not be ready for black president but I believe it would make us more diverse in a way that may help the country unite somewhat. Now I really dont't know what Obama or McCain supports but I do know that McCain would bring experience from the military background and everything. But I also think Amercia needs CHANGE (obama)
I could go back and forth all day long. Like Becky said, bush put a sour taste in our mouths and they really want something better tasting. I think it is time for America to have a Democratic President. Thats my opinion and I really like to see the other posts .

  9. I also do not know what either canidate really supports. I do agree that we need change and there is certainly a sour taste out there. I hope people are putting more thought into who they want for president than just skin color. However, I do believe that, that alone is what some people will use to make their decision. We have a long way to go on becoming a diverse country, and having a black president is not going to make enough of a change. What will make a change is how that black president does in his job. Who ever becomes president is going to have a lot of "sweeting" to do to get rid of that sour taste. I think this four year term will only be able to put a dent into everything that needs to be changed. Having a black president may have other countries look at the U.S. as being more diverse like someone said, but that won't mean we actually are.

  10. I totally agree with you Ian, we should totally vote for McCain! So that more and more innocent Iraqi civilians who had absolutely nothing to with, wait why did the U.S. military go into Iraq again? Weapons of Mass Destruction? Saddam Hussein? Democracy? (wait that was the greatest joke of them all wasn’t it). No wait its two seconds later it must have been someone or something else by now. Fact is that since the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan every 27.6 days more civilians lose their lives their because of what the U.S. has done, than did on 9.11. Think about that before voting for a guy who agrees with the Idiot who got us into this mess 90% of the time. Also who cares that President, oh sorry Senator Obama is black. It’s his Ideas, his character, and his qualifications that count (and make him the only sane choice). Oh and concerning your sexist opinion on women in politics, I might need to find a wall to bang my head against. How can you say that a female president would not be good enough, without giving a legit explanation? Even in ancient Egypt they had female pharaohs, like Hatshesupt, who lead their country to great prosperity, and peace. (still not good enough for you?)

i agree with what have been said about Obama & the changes he'll bring to America. but i have a comment about what Ian said about the(2 evils) you that you got a point there both Bush & Kerry had their negatives & it would effect us & its the same with McCain & Obama
but i do disagree on the war point. i was against it then & im still against it now. thought i have to say the reason you think Bush is down 2 earth & never brags about his educational accomplishments or shows that he's smart is cuz his IQ is 89 bro. its amazing how America elected him as a president(god only knows.

  12. I think that Jamie would do well to realize that this blog is not for attacking others. Queen Elizabeth was and other woman who ruled her country well, I am not sexist. I merely believe that men and women were created different, each sex has something the other does not, whites, blacks, and women are all equal, I believe that. If we had not responded to 911 the way we did there would probably have been other attacks by now, and I said Sadam was a major threat that needed to be taken care of. As far as innocent civilians go, that is how war is, I do not like it either, and I believe we have been in Iraq for to long, There is no more good that we can do there. When Bush made the decision to invade Iraq many people backed him up on it, and now they criticize him for it. As long as we are humans there will always be war and innocent lives lost, alone humans lack the capacity to find a better way to resolve things. Ian

  13. I think that is because Pres Bush has messed things up pretty bad for us, that regardless of race Obama seems to be the most qualified. People want to see a change that McCain may not be able to provide. I didn't want to comment on this until I saw McCains speech but it doesn't matter, I know who I'll be voting for.

  14. I agree with you shannon, however, it is not only the voters fault, it seems like the fact that Obama is “black”, McCain is a old white guy who likes Busch, (going back to primaries Clinton is a woman) is one of the main focuses of the media, and most people only know what mainstream media reports, the only way to really figure out what who supports is to go online and look, and on some issues you really have to look.

  15. The reason i am voting for Obama is that i believe he can change things here in America maybe not everything he is promising but he will do a better job than what bush has been doing. Further more, America is not ready for a female president. I believe it will happen but at least not for 4 years. I see too much of Bush in McCain to vote for him, that's my reasoning.

  16. i definatly think America is ready for a female president. but that doesn't mean i'm going to vote for any female that runs. I'm gong to vote for whoever i feel can run our country the best. I didn't really support Hilary, for a number of reasons (we really had to get out of the Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton pettern...), but none of those reasons being because she was female. I'm supporting Obama because he seems sincere, like a real person. i believe he will try hard to bring this counrty back to the way it should be...

  17. from what i've actually heard about this upcoming election is that a lot of people don't like either of the candidates and will most likely not even vote for either of them. i don't really think that a lot of people will vote for or against obama because he is black. i think that most will just vote for what party they support or who they like more and has the best views for the country. i think obama is the better candidate though mainly because he wants to make changes and he is a change to the norm that we have in our society now and that seem as though it is what we need/want as a county now.

  18. I think that the reason a lot of people are supporting Obama because of the way that our economy has come to be. Obama is looking out for the little people. He wants to give them courage to speak out and be able to fight for what they believe in because he himself has overcome so many odds for being a colored person in a racialized society. We need a more diverse society, people of color or different nationalities need to feel like they can pursue anything and we need to allow it. This is america, imagine what it would be like living anywhere else...

  19. It seems to me that a lot of people are supporting Barack Obama on the idea that he'll get elected and everything will change for the better. Everything's going to be fixed. Unfortunately with the system set up the way it is, it's incredibly difficult to deliver on many of the promises he's made. While I would rather see Obama in office than McCain, I think regardless of who gets elected this country will be only slightly better or slightly worse than it is now in four year.

  20. I think that Obama is better qualified to be president, but I also know those who just want to feel like race is no longer an issue in our country, they seem to believe that having a black president is the remedy to all of our racial tension problems.

  21. i agree with all of what ben jones said and he said it very good. i believe that if he is president the black community will feel stronger and feel like they can accomplish more but i'm not sure how much things will actually change if he is elected. i also think that we will still have racism but i think that the tensions between people will be lessened though if he is the president.

  22. i cant speak for anyone but me but i know that i would be voting for the most qualified candidate and while no one will probably agree with everything one specific person stands for you will have to weigh the more important issues and go from there

  23. I don't think many are voting for Obama because of his credentials though they can only help him even more. I believe that people are voting for Obama because of his ability to speak and reach out to America. He has a very influential voice and is powerful with his words. He speaks about change and is passionate about what he is talking about and I think that is what people like most.
